Draft: 2-26-93 Observation of local cloud and moisture feedbacks associated with high ocean and desert surface temperatures

چکیده
New data on clouds and moisture, made possible by reanalysis of weather satellite observations, show that the atmosphere reacts to warm ocean pools in the Western Pacific Ocean with increased moisture and cloudiness~ suggesting a negative feedback limiting the rise in seasurface temperature. The reverse was observed over hot deserts where both moisture and cloudiness decrease, suggesting a positive feedback perpetuating desert conditions. These observations reveal complex dynamicradiative interactions which show why this problem has

Summer precipitation determinant factors of Iran's South-East
Indian Ocean is known as a source of moisture for southeast of Iran due to summer precipitation. In this study, in order to investigate the role of SST of Indian Ocean, and the convergence and divergence fields in the precipitation of southeast of Iran, precipitation data of five synoptic stations were used during 2000-2010, including Iranshahr, Khash, ChahBahar, Zabul, and Saravan. To investig...
متن کاملCloud liquid water path variations with temperature observed during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment
[1] Because clouds play such a significant role in climate, understanding their responses to climatic temperature changes is essential to determining the overall impact of a given climate forcing. Cloud liquid water path (LWP) over tropical and midlatitude oceans has been observed to decrease with increasing cloud temperature. The presence of an ice sheet over the Arctic Ocean alters the energy...
متن کاملClimate response due to carbonaceous aerosols and aerosol-induced SST effects in NCAR community atmospheric model CAM3.5
This study used the Community Atmospheric Model 3.5 (CAM3.5) to investigate the effects of carbonaceous aerosols on climate. The simulations include control runs with 3 times the mass of carbonaceous aerosols as compared to the model’s default carbonaceous aerosol mass, as well as no-carbon runs in which carbonaceous aerosols were removed. The slab ocean model (SOM) and the fixed sea surface te...
متن کاملExpansion of the world's deserts due to global warming and vegetation-albedo feedback
Many subtropical and mid-latitude regions are expected to become drier due to climate change. This will lead to reduced vegetation which may in turn amplify the initial drying due to positive feedbacks such as albedo change in response to biome redistribution, an effect rarely accounted for in climate projections. Using a coupled atmosphere-ocean-land model with a dynamic vegetation component t...
متن کاملClimate feedbacks in CCSM 3 under changing CO 2 forcing . Part 1 II : Variation of climate feedbacks and sensitivity with forcing
5 Are equilibrium climate sensitivity and the associated radiative feedbacks a constant property 6 of the climate system, or do they change with forcing magnitude and base climate? Using 7 the radiative kernel technique, feedbacks and climate sensitivity are evaluated in a fully 8 coupled general circulation model (GCM) for three successive doublings of carbon dioxide 9 starting from present da...
